Leigh served in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1954 and held the rank of Staff Sergeant. Leigh was a single parent for at least 20 years and raised five children independently. She also was an avid Bingo player and loved to play the penny slots at Quilceda Creek Casino.

Her sister Florene Zachery of Asheboro, NC and her brothers Fred Pilkenton of Springhill, NC and Joseph Pilkenton of Yelm, WA, preceded her departure. Leigh will be remembered for her kind and generous ways, always an example of helping others who were less fortunate.
A private family celebration to honor Leigh's life is her preference.
